Peer to peer
A peer to peer network finds all computers (hosts) linked together so that they all have an equal standing on the network (equivalency). This can be useful for small networks, as often one machine will have a shared drive that the others can use and printers can be shared for the other users. The drawback to this system is security or lack of it!
Client server
This is as above, however one machine (typically a server) is the controller of network resources and services. The server can be configured to control the user’s environment, providing security logons, user and network shares etc. The main benefit is having a centralised platform to administer the entire network.
We have installed and supported Microsoft Small Business Server in many sites; this is a very cost effective solution for a small business as it comes bundled with many network services like Exchange email.
